This small book is filled with images from my first year living in Hamilton, Ontario.

When you’re new to a city, everything looks interesting. I shot a lot of film in 2018, mostly with my Rolleiflex, hence the square images. Upon revisiting this period of work, I was interested to see how many of these spaces I still find myself photographing. Like a dog burying a bone, I often go back and back again to the same space. Sometimes to see what has changed, sometimes to try and improve on what I had done in the past. In 2026, I am shooting these scenes on large format 5×7 film.

The prints in this book are small, for a couple of reasons. One being the size of the vintage album itself; they were printed to fit. Another being that in and around 2017, Kodak had a significant manufacturing problem with the film stock I was using at the time (T-Max 400). Kodak changed vendors for the paper backing on 120 roll film. This new paper stuck to the film stock, and created a mottling effect which they called “blocking”. It was a critical issue, particularly in areas of even texture like skies. A lot of my work was effected by this. My only solution at the time was to make small magnifications of enlargements; it hid the blocking somewhat. It is no surprise that I have never purchased Kodak products since this.
