East Hamilton Drinking and Dining (2026)

Another project born out of the goal of using up materials. My friend Simon Willms had me given a box of Ilford MGIV Postcard paper, which is no longer manufactured. Postcard paper has a long history, going back to the early 20th century. I have a large collection of vintage “real photo” postcards, which can be seen in another portfolio. As a medium, these postcards have always fascinated me.

I had found a condenser for my enlarger, which allowed me to do reductions. This is not something I had ever done in the darkroom before. So I decided to make reductions of large format 5×7 negatives to fit onto these cards. The work was shot in 2024 and 2025, and centers on drinking and dining establishments in East Hamilton, Ontario. By no means is this a comprehensive survey. I was working with negatives I had on hand, and a limited amount of paper. I tried to make an edition of 4 of each image.

These postcards fit nicely into an old Black’s photo finishing album, which I collect at thrift stores.
