Best Wishes for the Coming Year
I had started collecting greeting card templates in the late 2000’s. I had no plans to use them for anything other than personal use – sending kitschy greetings to friends and family.
In 2016 I purchased a Fuji GW690II camera, which shoots 6cm x 9cm frames on 120 film. It turns out that this is the same opening commonly found on the greeting card templates I had collected. A similar size neg to the Kodak folding cameras of the 1950’s. All I had to do was scotch tape the negative into the opening and make contact prints or enlargements. I was in business.
This series was a proof of concept. I photographed motels in Scarborough and Niagara Falls for my first outing with the camera. My enlarger can accommodate 5×7 film, so I was then able to enlarge these onto 16×20 paper.
I continue to enjoy using these templates, and have collected two binders of unique cards. In 2020 I created a series of photographs called Season’s Greetings from East Hamilton, and have more projects planned.
